Participants will have the exciting opportunity to explore Zambia’s vibrant cultural and natural heritage through a series of specially curated tours. These experiences will provide rare and guided insights into the country’s diverse traditions, remarkable historical landmarks, and breathtaking landscapes, adding a dynamic and memorable dimension to the overall conference experience.

Distances are calculated from Mulungushi International Conference Centre.

Pre-General Assembly and Conference Activities

LUSAKA CITY TOUR

Attire: Lightweight clothing, comfortable shoes, hat, sunglasses. Modest dress for Kabwata (knees/shoulders covered).

Overview:
A half-day tour exploring Lusaka's cultural, historical, and local highlights, including markets, museums, and key landmarks.

Itinerary: Cultural and Historical Immersion

Lusaka National Museum: Guided tour featuring Zambia's history, traditional art, archaeological artifacts and exhibits on independence-era leaders (e.g., Kenneth Kaunda).

Kabwata Cultural Village: Interactive experience with Zambian artisans crafting wooden sculptures, baskets, and jewelry. Optional live traditional dance performances (best on weekends).

Cairo Road and Government Buildings: Scenic drive through Lusaka's commercial hub, passing landmarks like the Presidential burial site, Parliament Building and Freedom Statue commemorating Zambia's 1964 independence.

Lusaka City Market: Dive into the vibrant chaos of one of Africa's largest open-air markets. Bargain for chitenge fabrics, fresh farm produce and street snacks like vitumbuwa (fritters).

MATEBETO (TRADITIONAL) WELCOME RECEPTION

Duration: 4 hours

Itinerary: Experience the heart of Zambian culture at the Matebeto Welcome Party, hosted by the Graduate Women Zambia Local Arrangements Committee! A feast of authentic Zambian flavours with an expanded menu of local delicacies include:

  • Nshima (Zambia’s staple maize and millet meal) paired with ifisashi (groundnut stew) and kapenta (dried fish)
  • Chikanda (wild orchid tuber cakes) and vinkubala (seasoned caterpillars) for the adventurous palate
  • Grilled or boiled bream, stewed goat meat with impwa (African eggplant)
  • Other delicacies include bush meat, village chicken and beans
  • Sweet treats like vitumbuwa (fried dough balls) and mapopo candies (papaya sweets)
  • Traditional beverages such as munkoyo (fermented maize drink), Chibwantu or maheu (sorghum shake)

The evening comes alive with vibrant performances of Zambia’s iconic dances, including the energetic Chintobentobe, the storytelling Mwomboshi and the rhythmic Kalindula dance. Guests can also engage with with locals to learn about the cultural significance of each dish and dance.

Attire: Smart-casual or traditional Zambian (chitenge/ wrapper-design outfits encouraged).

Post-Conference Activities

VISIT A RURAL SCHOOL IN CHONGWE DISTRICT (Educational tour/gender advocacy)

Organiser: Graduate Women Zambia

Activities:

  • Courtesy call at the District Education Office. Briefing on rural education challenges.
  • Visit rural girls in camp/boarding.
  • Donate supplies such as food, books, pens, pads, etc.
  • Conduct a career talk with the girls.
  • Meet and interact with female teachers.
  • Community Lunch: Simple meal with staff (included).

Attire: Modest, practical clothing (long pants/skirts), flat shoes (dusty).

Packing Extras: Donations (pens, notebooks, pads), wet wipes, sunscreen.

Note: Avoid flashy jewelry (cultural sensitivity).
