Dr. Sunoor Verma

  • Dr. Sunoor Verma
By founding the Namaste project Sunoor Verma learnt that if we don’t tell inspiring stories from the global south, narratives will continue to run lopsided. Evacuating the sick during the Kosovo Refugee crisis with UNHCR, he witnessed how women and girls bear the brunt of any emergency. Running a network of 75 NGOs in Macedonia taught Sunoor that women are unmatched in finding common grounds. Advancing national agendas on health for UNICEF in South East Asia taught Sunoor that unless girls and women are central to the design of programs, the programs will be headed nowhere. Building communities together in Sri Lanka around a peace agreement reminded Sunoor that protection of minority rights is equally uphill in any setting. Strategizing for an association of surgeons in Australia showed to Sunoor that women are disproportionately impacted by flawed patient rights laws. In a previous avatar, Sunoor was a practicing cardiac surgeon. In his most important role as a father and husband, he strives to practice feminism every day, sometimes succeeding and more often learning.
